Today is our queen day. Col du Tourmalet, Aspin and Peyresourde. 105km with over 3 km of climbing. If you're a cyclist, you know those numbers bring with them a certain amount of pain.
Tourmalet is Hors Categorie, but after riding it I will call it Horse Category as it is only fit for climbing by animals. I kept thinking of a famous quote from Octave Lapize cresting Tourmalet in 1910 when he yelled out
"Vous êtes des assassins! Oui, des assassins!"...
…in an attempt to explain to the course director that he didn't approve of the choice of route that year.
The heat, peaking at 38 degrees added more excitement into the mix. Le Gateaux positively lapped it up, using the days ride as an opportunity to 'set some times' while 'bagging some cols' (his words, not mine).
The rest of us plodded up the hills, cursing everything we could think to curse, before falling into a meditative trance and 'finding our rhythm'. The incredible beauty around us was nicely counterbalanced by the agony in our legs and chest.
